The CUBE Review(2020): Is It as Good as It Sounds?

By Oktay Ozadam

ChiliPad Cube Review

The Cube Sleep System (previously known as chiliPAD) was first founded back in 2007 and was later designed and created by the nephew of the inventor of the water bed—which explains where the idea to use water came from. Not only does this system effectively use water to regulate your sleep temperature during summer or winter nights, but it also provides a plethora of benefits that all users can enjoy.

If you sleep with a partner, you will love this one because you both can control your own side of the bed effectively—without taking over your partner's side.

While you can't schedule your own desired temperature range during the night, the device is great at maintaining the warmth setting you choose.

Update - March 23, 2020

Chili Technology has released the chiliBLANKET, a comfortable throw-on blanket that can now warm or cool you from above. This makes it an excellent addition to the CUBE (the temperature regulation from below). You can find a detailed review of chiliBLANKET here.

And best of all, it runs on the trusty old CUBE control unit, meaning you don’t have to worry about getting used to a new device. You can purchase the blanket on its’ own, or in a nifty combo with the CUBE control unit.

In this CUBE review, we take a thorough look at how it works, how comfortable it is, as well as some of the main features.

Review - An In-Depth Look Into the CUBE

Studies have proven that our body temperature affects our sleep, and REM stage requires your body heat to drop, and if you don't stay in the REM stage long enough then you won't get a restful night rest.

What is CUBE?

The CUBE is a temperature-controlled mattress pad and you can control your bed's hotness or coldness with just the push of a button. You can get the mattress pad as a single or dual-zone pad (which I will talk about later), and it uses a hydropower system to actively water throughout the pad with the use of silicone microtube networks within the pad.

The CUBE can cool and heat your mattress surface to any sleeping temperature between 55 degrees Fahrenheit and 100 degrees Fahrenheit and it slips onto your bed just like any of your go-to mattress pads do—so you won't have to rely on a bed fan anymore!

The CUBE Cube was created by Todd Youngblood, whose uncle was the inventor of the waterbed, so it is no surprise that he developed a cooling system that is entirely water-based.

This water-based solution is really effective because water is able to cool much more efficiently than air alone can.

How Does the CUBE Work?

Setup and Installation

When you purchase your CUBE, it will come with everything you need to get it set up and installed. Since it comes with easy to follow instructions, we won't go into depth about the setup process, but we wanted to go over a few things before going over the cube's impressive features.

The CUBE is available for all mattress dimensions, and it fits any mattress size. You can buy the mattress pad in single, twin, half king, full, queen, king, and California king sizes.

If you choose a dual-zone system, your package will come with everything you need as well— two cubes, two remotes, the tubes you need to connect the water supply from the cube to the mattress pad using a connective hose, and two different cords that will power each of the control units that come with the system. The side of the control units have air vents to efficiently manage the cooling and heating operation.

If you are using a single zone unite, then you will only have to set up one CUBE.

On the other hand, if you are setting up a dual-zone unit then you will have to make sure to keep each of the control units separate—they require an at least 2 feet between each other if you place them up next to each other. When installing your system, you will also need to make sure that you keep them away from all your windows.

While the units will come with some water already, you will need to fill each water tank with 16 ounces of water in the future—we will discuss regular maintenance in just a bit!

Temperature Regulation

If you are a hot sleeper, don't have reliable air conditioner, or even if you have a partner that is always cold, then you may be getting a poor night's slumber because your body is not staying cool enough during the night, then you are in luck because the CUBE device is specially made to help you get a better night's rest.

The chili technology uses water to provide you with temperature control and circulate either cool or warm water throughout water tubes inside the pad. You can adjust water temperature between 55℉ and 110℉ in one-degree increments, so you have options.

If you want to maintain your preferred surface temperature range effectively, I recommend that you use a blanket as an insulation layer.

The heat regulation this water-cooled mattress pad delivers will not only improve your sleep but cold therapy will also help you lose weight, minimize hot flashes, reduce sleeplessness, prevent night sweats during the night, and ensure that both you and your partner sleep comfortably during the night even if you have totally different heat preferences.

On top of the climate control, CUBE Sleep System also offers lots of additional features and health benefits—take a look a below to learn more!

Everything You Need to Know

Overall Comfort - How Does It Feel Like?

The CUBE heating and cooling pad is made of durable 150 count poly cotton and weigh less than five pounds. This ensures that it is soft and breathable—so it doesn't negatively impact any of the temperature regulating features.

You place the pad beneath the fitted sheet, and it fits securely thanks to the elastic straps on each corner and is available in all sizes—although it is important to note that the queen, king, California king, and split king sizes only being made as dual-chambered mattress pad (which are perfect for the dual zoned system and those of you who don't sleep alone).

This has not been a huge problem among customers since the system is sold with two control units anyway (for dual-zone systems), so even if they sleep alone, they can just arrange each side separately and set the temperature to their liking.

Although there are no comfort issues to report from this, some users don't love having to remember to put each side separately if they are lone sleepers. However, if you have a partner, you will absolutely like this feature.

Overall, the mattress pad is thin yet comes with lots of additional padding. It is quilted but will actually make your bed firmer rather than softer. The silicone tubing is made of medical-grade material. You will not feel the tubes under the pad when you lay on your mattress if you are not very sensitive. It is available for all bed sizes and can be used with a waterproof mattress protector—just in case!

Noise Level - Is CUBE Loud?

The CUBE can run for up to 10 hours without ceasing, so the noise it emits is crucial if you want to get a good night's rest.

So, will CUBE be too loud for you to sleep?

It sounds similar to a fan sound or a white noise machine—and many users report the same thing.

If you already use a white noise machine, then you may not mind the sound it emits, and some may even find it soothing to fall asleep.

Other users who report they are sensitive to any noise while they sleep also state that it is not too loud—and the noise intensity is often compared to the hum of a computer fan that is running—and many reported that after a while they were able to get used to it.

So, if you can't get used to the noise levels, is there anything that you can do?

Well, if you need time to get used to it—or if the noise is only bothering you because the cube is too close to you—then you can move the cube to the foot of your bed instead of on the side of the headboard. Putting the cube at the foot of the bunk will allow the mattress and blankets to act as a type of sound barrier, which will minimize the noise.

If you know you cannot handle absolutely any noise, then this may not be the right device for you. However, if you want to drown out the sound with a different selection on a separate sound machine, aka white noise maker, then that is definitely an option many users have taken as well.

Regardless of your preferences, if you aren't sure of whether or not the sound will affect you negatively, then I encourage you to take advantage of the 90-night sleep trial the company offers if you want to be sure this is the right choice for you.

Controlling your Device

The CUBE System also comes with wireless remote control for each of the cubes. The single-zone systems for the single and twin XL mattresses come with only one cube, while the queen, king, California king, and dual king beds all come with two units.

If you have a partner, you each can set up your own cube, and the double chamber mattress pad will allow you to control each side of the bed separately.

The remote is wireless and can be synced to its corresponding control unit easily.

One of the most common "complaints" among users who have two different control units is that they often mix up their remotes. This can be easily fixed by labeling each remote.

If you ever misplace your wireless remote, or if it runs out of batteries and you don't have any to replace them with, you can also adjust the temperature via the control unit.

How does Room Temperature Affect CUBE's Performance?

While the CUBE is efficient at cooling and heating your mattress, it is essential to consider the ambient conditions in the bedroom it is being used.

This factor can determine how warm or cool you can set your device to. Since the CUBE cube uses the bedroom temperature around it to reach the temperature you desire.

Despite this stipulation, many users find that the device still delivers impressive temperature changes even when the temperature in your home is too hot or too cold—it just takes it longer to get there.

If you keep your home at room temperature during all seasons, then you won't have a problem with this—but if you don't have (or don't use) your air conditioning or heating units in your home then this definitely something you need to keep in mind when using this mattress cooling system.

Can You Schedule Temperature During Night?

The one downfall this system has, however, is its inability to schedule your own temperature preferences during the night. As we mentioned earlier, some studies show that body needs to cool off during our REM stage and that a gradual increase of our body temperature allows us to wake up at the appropriate time—when our bodies are ready and have gotten the right amount of rest.

Once you have set the temperature, the mattress pad will remain at that level until you manually change it.

This also means that it won't adjust to your body getting too hot or too cold during the night—which may wake you up if you are sensitive to heat changes.

Many users don't mind that they can't schedule temperature changes. However, I believe that this is a nice feature to have, and if you want to be able to schedule heat levels and create your own temperature profile(s), then I recommend to check out this new bed cooler, released in 2019, from Chili Technology.

Single and Dual Zoned Options For One or Two Sleepers

The dual-zone feature addresses issues many couples face and won't force your partner (or you) to deal with the temperature preferences of the other. If you suffer from hot flashes or night sweats, you will find this feature to be indispensable once you get used to it.

  • The single-zone CUBE sizes are the single, twin XL, split cal king, and full sizes. They feature one chamber in the mattress pad and only deliver one choice for climate control.
  • On the other hand, the dual-zone systems are for all of the other mattress sizes. They have two separate chambers so that you can connect a cube to each one. This means that each side of the bed surface can be controlled and set to two different temperature settings—making it perfect for couples!

According to user reviews of CUBE, the CUBE does a great job of keeping each side of the bed at the temperature you set, although sometimes there are irregularities.

Maintenance

Where to Place your System

Once you have adequately installed your system, you place it on a flat surface and ensure it has two feet of space around it. Before you couldn't put the system under your mattress, however, if you get its new and improved design, then you will have that option now—just make sure you have bed risers set in place.

Another great place to put your cubes is at the foot of the bed—which is easy to do thanks to the long tubing the system comes with. This placement minimizes its noise output as well—so it is a win-win for many users.

Water Replacement

When you first receive the control unit, you will need to fill up each cube(water tank) with roughly about 16 ounces of distilled water or filtered water. Each box comes with a water indicator light so that you know if you have added enough as well as let you know when you need to add more at any time.

Using distilled water (instead of tap water) prevents any sediment build-up from occurring and prevents bacteria from growing—which helps keep your system cleaner as well as extends its life.

Because the cube is a closed system, evaporation isn't something you have to worry about too much and means you only have to add water about every 3 to 4 days.

It is important to note, however, that the evaporation rate will depend on the ambient temperature you keep in your room—so keep track of your water if you keep your home warmer than room temperature.

Lastly, when you use the heating portion of the cube, you will find that the water evaporates much faster as well. Many people keep a gallon or two of distilled water on hand just in case.

Cleaning your CUBE and Mattress Pad

In the past, the Chili Technology often recommended using hydrogen peroxide to clean the system; however, they released the CUBE System Cleaning Solution, a specially prepared cleaning powder with antimicrobial ingredients.

And, to clean your cube, you will need to drain it, use the cleaning solution (or hydrogen peroxide), and refill the water tank with distilled water. Turn it on high and run it for 1 hour. Once it is done, you can drain it and refill it with the right amount of distilled water.

When you need to wash the pads —throw it in your washer and use cold water. Just be sure to follow the instruction manual to ensure you secure the microtubes properly. Also, keep the host extension secure with a rubber band to prevent any damage

The CUBE Alternatives

There are other similar devices to this one like Bedjet, Sleep Number DualTemp Layer, Perfect Sleep Pad, just to name a few. Is CUBE Worth the Price?

While the CUBE is expensive when you get the options for the larger sizes, it is definitely worth the cost if you are a hot sleeper looking for some relief. Not only can you specify the temperature down to the degree, but it is also a perfect device for two sleepers.

Each purchase also comes with a 90-day satisfaction guarantee along with a 2-year warranty. If you want a steal, you can take a look at the refurbishes products the company sometimes offers.
