Bodimetrics O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor Review: SpO2 sleep Monitor in a Small Package

By Oktay Ozadam

Bodimetrics O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor

The O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor is a wearable tracker that uses both daily activity and sleep activity to give you a better idea of what's keeping you up at night.

Although there are a variety of similar devices on the market, I wanted to find out what sets the O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor apart.

Innovative Wearable Design

BodiMetrics, the O2 Vibe's developer, hails their product as the lightest (weighing just 1.6 ounces) and smallest SpO2 sleep monitor on the market. Equipped with a patented thumb sensor, the O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor offers some big features for such a small package.

The O2 Vibe fits comfortably around your wrist to ensure it doesn't disturb you at night. The included thumb sensor is attached to the O2 Vibe via USB. BodiMetrics claims that no other pulse oximeter provides this capability and if this is true, it's certainly a smart design choice.

Why is this an innovative design choice? It is well known that the most accurate readings of blood oxygen levels are recorded through the capillaries on the human hand.

The O2 Vibe's thumb sensor works in just this way by shining two small beams into the capillaries of the finger and recording the amount of oxygen present in the blood. These measurements are then displayed on the O2 Vibe's indicator screen in an easy to read format.

BodiMetrics' sleep and fitness monitor also takes only 2 hours to charge fully. The device lasts up to 5 hours on one charge when recording fitness activities and up to 10 hours when measuring sleep.

While this may not seem like an impressive battery life upon first glance, the amount of data that the device is constantly recording is likely the cause.

Still, if you find that you typically sleep for longer than 10 hours at a time, you're at risk that your O2 Vibe will die during the night.

Easy to Use Interface

The O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness monitor delivers daily reports via its iOS/Android friendly companion app. Many users have praised the app for its simplicity and ease of use.

One Amazon customer reported that the app's setup was easy and that the daily reports included charts and graphics that were well-designed.

The app is also especially functional and allows the user to share their results with their health care provider through a secure cloud service.

This is helpful as any pulse oximeter for sleep shouldn't be taken as a full diagnosis but, instead, a tool that assists you and your doctor in drawing your own conclusions.

An Overview of the O2 Vibe's Features

So we know that the O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor tracks, well, sleep and fitness… but how does it use this tracking to benefit its user?

Sp02 Sleep Monitoring/Blood Oxygen Level Tracking

In an attempt to help identify and fight sleep apnea, the O2 Vibe tracks and analyzes blood oxygen levels each night. Using Bodimetrics' "smart vibration" technology, the O2 Vibe will vibrate upon any noticeable drop in blood oxygen levels.

This vibration is subtle enough that it won't disturb your sleeping partner but encourages you to change sleeping positions. Some consumers even reported that the vibration didn't even fully awaken them. This is important for those that snore as a simple change in position can help open the airways and eliminate snoring.

The O2 Vibe's blood oxygen level tracking is also highly customizable. Users can indicate the exact threshold that their blood oxygen level must drop below before receiving a vibration. This is a feature absent in many competitors with similar products.

Typically, a sleep tracking device has an agreed-upon threshold, and while this can offer a good indication of sleep apnea risks to most users, it's nice that the O2 Vibe adds this further bit of customizability on a person by person basis.

Sleep Mode Tracking

There are a variety of other useful features present in O2 Vibe's sleep mode tracking. The device also offers an in-depth look at overall sleep quality by monitoring heart rate and movement during sleep.

By observing and generating reports on heart rate and movement during sleep, the user can better understand specific factors that may be to blame for their restlessness.

The O2 Vibe's sleep mode offers two different operating statuses: normal mode and hibernation mode. Each mode begins recording data within two minutes, but hibernation mode eliminates any bright light from the O2 Vibe's indicator so that you can fall asleep easily.

To view your Sp02 readings at any point during the night, simply remove the thumb tracker for 10 or more seconds.

It's worth noting that the O2 Vibe is in a league all it's own when it comes to the widely accepted idea of what a sleep tracking device does. How so?

Unlike other products we've reviewed in the past such as Go2Sleep, Beddr's SleepTuner or Withings Sleep, the O2 Vibe doesn't place its focus upon sleep phases like most of its competitors. This means that for those without certain cardiovascular issues such as sleep apnea, there's only so much value present in the O2 Vibe.

These users won't get an in-depth look at their sleep activity during different stages of sleep, and if the O2 Vibe doesn't detect obvious health issues, there will be little useful data. Is it great for a very targeted audience? Yes. Will everyone appreciate the data that it offers? Not necessarily.

Fitness Mode Tracking

With the O2 Vibe's fitness tracking mode, users can track their heart rate and blood oxygen saturation levels during light exercise.

You can also set daily activity goals, and the O2 Vibe will push you to get up and to move when you fall short of your goal by alerting you with a notification.

By viewing the sleep and fitness mode tracking results together, you can get an idea of how your activities during the day affect your sleep at night. It's also helpful to see how a more restless night's sleep affects your energy levels the following day.

Products Similar to the O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor

As always, let's take a look at some of the gadgets similar to BodiMetric's O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor. We'll directly compare the features in each of these products to help you make a well-educated decision when you pick up your own sleep tracking device.

ViATOM Oxygen Monitor and Sleep Tracker

The ViATOM Sleep Oxygen Monitor has many of the same features as the O2 Vibe in a different design. The ViATOM Bluetooth Sleep Tracker and Oxygen Monitor is a sleep tracking ring without any additional attachments, however, unlike the O2 Vibe, the user slides the ring onto their finger each night and hits a button to activate the ring's recording feature.

The ViATOM tracks heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and movement during sleep.

Similarly to the O2 Vibe, this ring also comes with a customizable blood oxygen level threshold so that you can be alerted of blood oxygen level drops by your own specification.

A key difference that sets the ViATOM Sleep Oxygen Monitor ahead of the O2 Vibe is a large difference in battery life. The ViATOM lasts up to 16 hours longer on a single charge than the O2 Vibe with a total battery life of 15 hours.

Lookee Ring Sleep Monitor

The Lookee Ring Sleep Monitor is another sleep tracking ring promising to give you a better night's sleep and is cheaper in price than both the O2 Vibe and ViATOM Sleep Oxygen Monitor.

It is equipped with its own blood oxygen saturation level tracking as well as heart rate monitoring. With the best battery life we've seen in any of the products we've looked at today, the Lookee Ring Sleep Monitor lasts longer than it's competition with a total of 16 hours on a single charge.

I was interested in finding that the developer, Lookee, offers another sleep tracking device very similar the O2 Vibe complete with its own thumb sensor attachment- the Lookee Wrist Sleep Monitor.

In comparing the design of each device side by side, they're nearly identical. Though I am unsure which product appeared on the market first, it would look that the O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Tracking Monitor isn't the only blood pulse oximeter device on the market utilizing thumb sensor tracking technology.

Where You Can Find the O2 Vibe Sleep and Fitness Monitor

If you've decided to give the O2 Vibe a try, you may be wondering where you can pick it up at the best price.

Available at a retail price of $199, you can find the device at BodiMetric's official website. They offer their customers free standard shipping on all orders within the United States. While you're there, you can also check out the various other products in BodiMetric's sleep tracking technology lineup including the BodiMetrics Performance Monitor.

If you're an Amazon shopper, the O2 Vibe is available to you through third-party sellers only so prices will vary.

I was also able to find the O2 Vibe available through Costco although this item is offered to Costco members only at a special membership price. If you are a Costco member, however, it may be worth checking out!
