A Buyer's Guide to Best Sleep Trackers

By Oktay Ozadam

Best Sleep Tracker

With all of the selections out there, how do we define the best sleep tracker?

After all, so many of them offer similar features and can effectively track and help you improve your sleep that it can be almost impossible to rank them in terms of tracking the quality of the sleep.

Sleep trackers come in the form of rings, chest straps, headbands, under-mattress pads, smart pillows, smartphone apps, smartwatches, wrist bands, or as a smart mattress that monitors your sleep without any extra gadgets on your bed.

Well, let's begin with discussing what a quality sleep tracker should be able to do and what they really are.

Comfort and Accuracy

First and foremost, a sleep-detecting device will accurately, effectively, and efficiently monitor and track sleep data—with minimal impact on your quality of sleep.

This means that regardless of if you choose to use a wearable or non-wearable sleep tracking device, using it won't disturb your sleep and will be comfortable to wear while you sleep.

Thus, when looking for the top sleep monitor to track the characteristics of your sleep, accuracy and comfort are the two most important factors to consider—the right sleep tracker for you will not negatively impact your quality of sleep; instead, it should give you the tools you need to get a better night's sleep!

So, let's talk a little bit more about what to look for when gauging the overall accuracy and comfort of the sleep tracker we are considering.

Accuracy is important because you need to know where your sleep quality lies now before you can work towards improving it.

While personal sleep monitors are not currently able to provide users with the same levels of accuracy as data from a Polysomnography sleep study, there are competitive sleep trackers that get pretty close.

For example, Fitbit and Apple are currently taking leaps to ensure they can track their user's sleep more precisely.

The second factor we look at when pinpointing a good quality sleep tracker is how comfortable they are—this is especially important because if you use something that makes you uncomfortable, it can mess with your sleep data and provide you with less than accurate information.

Since comfort is highly dependent on your personal choice, we made sure to provide a diverse list of sleep trackers, so everyone has something that fits their preferences.

To keep our review straight and to the point, we will touch on the accuracy of each of the sleep trackers featured below. We have also separated our reviews into the wearable and the non-wearable sleep monitors—so you can jump straight to the point if you already have a feel for what you are looking for.

The Best Wearable Sleep Trackers

1. Fitbit Versa Smart Watch

A sleep tracker with fitness tracking

If you want a reliable, stylish, and techy wearable sleep and activity tracker, then the Fitbit Versa fits the bill. Not only does this smartwatch by Fitbit look sleek and stylish, but you also have the option to choose from the brand's customizable straps—so you can have a say in the color choices you end up going with.

When it comes to sleep tracking, the Fitbit Versa is able to track your light, deep, and REM sleep cycle stages. It will use the advanced data it collects to help you modify and adjust your sleep schedule to help you find the routine that will work perfectly and trouble-free for your lifestyle. The Fitbit Versa also records how long you sleep for and features a silent alarm clock to help you effectively wake up at the right time.

Furthermore, it utilizes PurePulse technology to measure your blood flow with light—which is one of its more innovative features. The PurePulse technology is also one of the Fitbit Versa's most important features because it allows it to provide reliable and accurate results that you can count on and use to enhance your sleep and overall health.

In the end, the Fitbit Versa is more than just a sleep tracker—it has a battery life of up to 4 days, on top of sleep tracking it can also track your heart rate, count your steps, and functions as an overall fitness and movement tracker that provides you with a ton of data. It uses more than 3 billion sleep logs to provide you with beneficial sleep insights and is a great device to get you on track to a better night's sleep.

Pros:

- Great for users who want to track more than just sleep

- Automatic sleep detection

- Great battery life

- Water resistant

- Provides in-depth sleep data

- Female-focused health tracking

- Budget-friendly price

- Attractive design and look

Cons:

- The accuracy of the sleep data can vary

2. Dreem Headband- EEG Sleep Tracker

In-depth sleep tracking for the overall most effective sleep improvement

While we aren't going into an in-depth explanation about accuracy in all of our reviews, we believe this one deserves a special mention. The Dreem band is by far one of the most accurate wearable sleep trackers out there, and it has the data to back it up.

The Dreem band was developed by the founder of Rythm, a French startup company. Its developers wanted to make an effective device that was specifically designed to improve the wearer's sleep—which eventually led to the Dreem band.

This wearable device is easy to use and is worn like a headband. Its accuracy is due to the 6 sensors it uses to monitor your sleep and track your brainwaves while you sleep. You can actually see your brainwaves on the app and use this advanced sleep data to measure your progress as you use it over time!

Dreem also tracks your EEG, heart rate, breathing, and movement while you sleep. The fact that it monitors your EEG (brain activity) is why it is more accurate—this doesn't allow your heart rate, movement, etc. to skew your data and make you think your sleep quality is better or worse than it actually is.

Dreem also incorporates sound stimulation and a smart alarm to help you get to sleep and wake up effectively. While the bone induction sound quality can use some improvement, however, it sounds a lot better with headphones.

The Dreem coach that comes with the band is one of the distinctive features—it will help you improve your sleep in the long term, so if you are patient, you will effectively boost your slumber with the help of the Dreem band.

The biggest downfall of the Dreem band is that some users find it to be uncomfortable and reports that it diminishes their quality of sleep, although many users report that they get used to it over time.

While the brand has addressed these comfort issues and updated its first model to be more comfortable, it is important to note that the discomfort is due to the six sensors it uses to monitor your brain waves, heart rate and movement.

If you want something really accurate that will also help you improve the long-term quality of your sleep habits over time, then the Dreem band is the way to go—just keep in mind that you may have to sacrifice comfort until you get used to wearing the Dreem band.

Pros

- Accurate because it monitors your brainwaves

- Comes with a 30-day guarantee, only pay for shipping

- The app is continuously updated

- Smart alarm

- Comes with a travel case

- Dreem Coach is easy to use and helps you set and achieve sleep goals

Cons

- Expensive

- Uncomfortable for some users due to the sleep sensors

- Needs to be charged daily

- The sound is better with earplugs

3. Oura Ring

Stylish, comfortable, and effective—a sleep tracker you'll never want to take off!

If you know a bit about sleep trackers, then you have probably heard about the Oura Ring. Not only does this one look great, but it is comfortable and accurate—two of the most important things we all need to consider when looking for the right sleep monitor!

As the name suggests, this smart ring sleep monitor is worn on your finger and is one that can be used 24/7. It is capable of tracking more than just sleep—like your heart rate and breathing.

While the Oura Ring can also monitor your heart rate, respiratory rate, body temperature, and certain activities, it is important to note here that the Oura ring is not a complete fitness tracker like the Fitbit Versa.

It will not keep track of your heart rate when you exercise or track the calories you burn throughout the day, for example.

Instead, the Oura is a sleep tracker that focuses on your overall wellness.

It is designed to track and monitor your slumber accurately, in order to help you adjust your sleep cycle.

The Oura sleep ring will provide you with information that will help you get better sleep at night and reduce your overall stress levels so that you can improve your readiness, performance, and mental awareness.

The Oura sleep and activity tracker is reliable and accurate and has several studies to back up how it works and explain why it is effective.

This ring sleep tracker uses your sleep data, heart rate, and respiratory rate levels to provide you with a daily sleep score—which will help you establish a baseline as well as let you know what areas you need to work on improving.

Pros

- One of the most accurate sleep trackers out there

- Tracks your heart rate and breathing levels as well

- Will help you improve your sleep and decrease your stress levels

Cons

- Expensive

- If you want a fitness tracker, then this is not the way to go

4. Thim

Learn how to sleep better!

The Thim wearable sleep tracker is another ring, like the Oura ring—however, you can't wear it all day like the Oura. Instead, you only have to wear this one at night when you sleep, or during any naps, you may take throughout the day.

If you want to learn how to take effective power naps—like the coveted 10-minute power nap—then the Thim ring is the way to go.

This device is designed to train your body to fall asleep and will condition you to sleep and nap effectively and efficiently. It does this by retraining your body to slumber by actually waking you up during the first hour—which in the long run will teach your body how to go to sleep much faster. This technique is specifically useful for anyone who struggles with insomnia or taking short and sweet (but effective) power naps.

Pros

- Will retrain your body to drop asleep quickly

- Helps you take efficient power naps

- You only need to wear it when you sleep

Cons

- Expensive

- Only tracks your sleep

5. Letscom Fitness Tracker

Affordable, practical, and stylish—what's not to love!

If you are on a budget but still want a sleep tracker that is effective, accurate, and will get the job done then the Letscom fitness tracker may be a great choice for you.

The LETSCOM looks a lot like some Fitbit devices but comes at a fraction of the cost—several models range in prices between $16 and $40. It has a sleek design, and you can pick from different colors, so you can be sure you will pick something you won't mind wearing every day.

While the screen on this one is easy to read, we specifically recommend the color screen model because it is easier to read and distinguish between numbers. It is also able to monitor your heart rate while you wear it, so it provides an additional feature.

Not only will the Letscom fitness tracker monitor your sleeping period but, as the name suggests, it will do much more than that. You can wear this device throughout the day and during your workouts to track your heart rate, steps, and calories burned. It is waterproof as well, so you won't have to worry about taking it off when you sweat, swim, or get caught in the rain.

As far as sleep tracking, it will record your sleep data and give you a good an overall idea of the quality of sleep you are getting. It will track how long you sleep, and the tracker's silent alarm will gently wake you up with its vibrating feature.

If you want an affordable wearable device that you can sync to your phone and that will receive notifications, like your texts and calls, then this fitness tracker may fit the bill.

Pros

- Affordable

- Several colors to choose from

- Gentle vibrating alarm

- Syncs with your phone and receives notifications

Cons

- Not sleep specific

- No information on how accurate it actually is at tracking sleep

The Non-Wearable Sleep Trackers

1. Beautyrest SleepTracker

The accurate and contactless sleep tracking for two!

If you are looking for a sleep tracker that both you and your partner can use, then look no further because the Beautyrest Sleeptracker monitor is one of the most reliable ones to choose from!

This non-wearable sleep tracker is easy to use and set up—and will effectively track you and your partner's sleep separately.

However, it is important to note that if one of you tosses and turns into the other person's side of the bed during the night, then it may affect the data the sleep tracker displays.

2. Emfit QS

A sleep tracker with athletes in mind!

Whether you are a professional athlete or just like to get your daily workout in, your daily zzzz's are important—and you need to make sure you get the restful sleep that you can in order to push yourself to the limit.

The Emfit QS was designed with athletes in mind, although it is important to note that anyone who wants to effectively and accurately track their sleep can benefit from this non-wearable sleep tracker.

This device is another contactless sleep tracker—you place the device's measuring strip on the side of your mattress, and voila, it is ready to go. Since it uses ballistocardiography (your heart rate) to monitor your sleep patterns throughout the night, it may be less accurate at times since there are sometimes other factors that affect your heart rate while you sleep.

However, the fact that it uses your heart rate is what makes it a great fit for athletes. It is able to effectively score how well your body is recovering—which helps you pinpoint the sleep habits (and others) that reduce your recovery.

And, if you want heaps of data, this device may be the way to go—on top of your sleep, it will also measure your breathing, movement while you sleep, heart rate, and REM and deep sleep stages. The data it provides will help you better understand your sleep and make sure you get better rest.

- Only measures data for one person

- Expensive

3. Withings Sleep

Affordable sleep tracking and home integration at its finest!

This smart sleep system by Withings is one of the most affordable sleep trackers that also comes with total home integration. In contrast to Withings Steel Smartwatch, it is a non-wearable sleep tracking pad, and you only have to use it when you sleep or nap and won't have to worry about taking it with you wherever you go.

If you are into techy products and want a sleep tracker that uses IFTTT to interact effectively with all of your smart home devices—so you can adjust your home temperature, turn lights on and off, etc. directly from the app on your smartphone. The app is easy to use and will definitely simplify your life once you get it synced and ready to use.

It is perfect for the lone sleeper and will provide you with information that will help you get back on track with the most appropriate sleep schedule for you.

- No smart alarm

4. Sleepscore Max

Totally contactless and incredibly easy to use!

Now, this is a completely contactless sleep monitor—unlike some of the other non-wearable devices reviewed here, this one actually just sits on your nightstand and can track and monitor your patterns of sleep without having to be placed on your mattress or anywhere on your bed.

Not only does the Sleepscore Max track and record your sleep data from a distance, but it will also monitor the ambient lighting, temperatures, and other environmental factors in your room that may affect your sleep patterns.

This device is lightweight and easy to set up. While it is on the pricey side, all you have to do to set it up is place it on your bedroom's nightstand, plug it in, and get it all set up.

However, it is important to note here that the device needs to sit higher than the top of your mattress for the most accuracy. So, if you find that it is still too low on your nightstand, just make sure to prop it.

The Sleepscore Max comes with an easy to use app that is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. Once you answer a series of questions that will help customize the device to your needs, then you will be all set up and ready to get to track your sleep every night.

When you are ready to use this device, you will just have to log into your app and let it know that it is time for bed—which can be the one hindrance for many users, especially if you tend to be the forgetful type. On the other hand, the smart alarm clock is helpful, and the app will make sure to wake you up at the most optimal times.

Pros

- Completely contactless

- Provides an overall Sleep Score for the entire night

- Easy to use app

- Smart alarm

- Sleek design

Cons

- You need to manually let it know that you are going to sleep

- Can be less accurate if you don't set it up correctly

Sleep Products not Listed in our Review

Our lists of products are some of the best available. However, you may find that other sleep products are mentioned on other reviews featuring the top sleep trackers currently available.

It is difficult to pinpoint the best of the best when it comes to any product, and it is important to note here that some products not mentioned on our list are due to new versions being out and other factors, although they may still be available via online retailers like Amazon and eBay.

Take a look below to learn why we did not review them below.

Beddit 3 Sleep Tracker

The Beddit 3 sleep tracker is actually available for purchase via the Apple store, and Apple recently released the new 3.5 version of this device. However, since Apple recently canceled the cloud data storing for this device, we are not sure what Apple has in store for the future of this sleep tracker.

ResMed S+

This device is not reviewed here because we feature its upgrade version, the SleepScore Max sleep tracker—which is actually the product of a joint venture between ResMed (a company that manufactures sleep apnea devices) and Dr Oz. Moreover, since its accompanying app is no longer being developed further, it may not be a convenient purchase for many users.

Hello Sense

The Hello Sense sleep-tracking ball was initially hoped to be a best-seller, and the company hoped that it would be a success. Unfortunately, it did not leave up to the hype the company put out and now the company has since gone out of business.

Withings Aura Smart Sleep

We've reviewed the Withings sleep tracking device above although you may also find the Withings Aura Smart Sleep device for purchase through some online retailers. When Nokia originally acquired the Withings brand, the Aura was discontinued— although, Nokia later decided to sell Withings back to the original company (confusing, we know!). So, since the Aura is no longer being made, we did not review it here, and instead reviewed their only sleep tracker— the Withings Sleep(aka Nokia Sleep System).

Sleep Shepherd Blue

If you scoured the internet looking for sleep trackers, then you may have stumbled across this name; however, it is unfortunately no longer available for purchase, and the official online store has been shut down. This device was an EEG sleep monitoring device, similar to the Dreem band featured on our list.

Zeo Personal Sleep Manager

The Zeo personal sleep manager was the first sleep monitor that featured EEG monitoring. However, ResMed actually purchased this company's intellectual property and the company, unfortunately, went out of business for good in 2013.
