By Oktay Ozadam

CozyPhones Headband Headphones

If you like falling asleep to music or nature sounds but don't like uncomfortable headphones digging into your ears, you'll be happy to hear that there's a great new solution on the market—CozyPhones!

CozyPhones allow you to listen to music, podcasts, or other sounds without needing to stick anything in your ear or use big, bulky headsets. They're perfect for sleeping in, exercising, or any other activity where slim, lightweight headphones are needed.

What Exactly is a "CozyPhone"?

CozyPhones are super comfortable headphones that come in the form of a soft, flexible headband. Instead of thick headphones connected by a hard plastic band or earbuds that have to be jammed into your ears, CozyPhones can be worn as easily as any regular cloth headband.

There are several different series of CozyPhone to fit various possible uses.

Five Flavors of CozyPhone

Original Series

The original series of CozyPhone consists of an extra wide fleece headband and comes in five different color options. The wide headband helps to provide additional stability and allows these headphones to work perfectly as a sleep mask when pulled down over the eyes.

Original series CozyPhones fit a head circumference of 20 inches to 22 inches, while other adult CozyPhone series fit heads in the 22-inch to 24-inch range. This makes the original series a better fit than later models for those with smaller head sizes.

PROS
  • Comfortable fleece exterior
  • 5 color options
  • Better for smaller head sizes
  • Can be used as a sleep mask
  • Lightweight
  • Machine washable
CONS
  • Fleece can be stuffy and hot
  • Wired: Cord can tangle at night
  • Headband may slide at night

Active Series

As opposed to the original line designed primarily for bedtime use, the active line of CozyPhones is designed for athletes on the move.

Traditional headphones bump around uncomfortably if you wear them while running, while CozyPhones' active headphones are lightweight and won't slide around when you're in motion.

Unlike the traditional, fleece CozyPhones, the active line features special lycra mesh on the inside to shed heat and wick away moisture. This special lycra material also makes the active CozyPhone series resistant to sweat and moisture over long term use.

PROS
  • Lycra mesh for cooling
  • Moisture wicking material
  • Better for larger head sizes
  • 8 color options
  • Lightweight
  • Machine washable
CONS
  • Lycra material can be squeaky
  • Wired: Cord can tangle while moving

Contour Series

The newest type of CozyPhone is the contour series. These CozyPhones feature a special design to keep the speakers in place on your ears and face even when tossing and turning in bed.

They're also slimmer than original series CozyPhones and are lined with a unique cooling mesh to avoid overheating.

Recently CozyPhones has released an offshoot of the contour series featuring Bluetooth connectivity rather than a wired connection. These CozyPhones are more expensive than previous models, but allow you to listen to music in bed without any worry of getting tangled in the cord. A removable USB cord is used to charge the batteries on these wireless CozyPhones.

PROS
  • Comfortable fleece exterior
  • Interior cooling mesh
  • Better for large head sizes
  • 3 color options
  • Contoured to avoid shifting
  • Lightweight
  • Machine washable
  • Bluetooth version is tangle-free
CONS
  • More expensive
  • Wired version can tangle at night

Kids CozyPhones

One of the most popular CozyPhone lines is the one designed specifically for children. Kids CozyPhones are made with soft fleece material and bright colors. Their designs include animals, magical creatures, pirate hats, bows, and even characters from popular children's shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Paw Patrol.

These children's headband headphones make excellent gifts for kids because the soft fleece headband is harder to break than regular headphones, and the kid-friendly designs are exciting for kids to wear.

Like other CozyPhones, the Kid CozyPhone headband is entirely washable, which is a relief for parents with messy children.

PROS
  • Comfortable fleece exterior
  • Kid-friendly patterns and colors
  • 19 colors and patterns
  • Can be used as a sleep mask
  • Lightweight
  • Machine washable
CONS
  • Fleece can be stuffy and hot
  • Wired: may tangle at night
  • Limited size: may not fit all kids

Behind the Headband

For all the benefits they offer, CozyPhones actually have a relatively simple design. Two super-slim speakers sit within the fabric headband and hook up to a smartphone or other musical device via a braided cord and 3.5 mm jack. The comfortable stretchiness of the headband helps to hold the speakers in place.

Of course, not everyone has the same head shape or ear position, so the location of the CozyPhone speakers is entirely adjustable. To adjust the speakers, simply slide them back and forth within the headband until they rest comfortably over your ears. Unfortunately, any tugging on the cord tends to shift the speakers within the headband, forcing you to adjust them again.

When adjusting or putting on CozyPhones, it's always important to check that the speakers are turned the right direction and that the headband isn't inside out. Since the speakers are basically symmetrical, it can be difficult to tell which side is the sound-producing side when they're in the headband. Speakers turned in the wrong direction can result in highly muffled sound quality.

In order to make any type of CozyPhone headband completely washable, the speakers can be easily removed for cleaning. There is a small opening in the back of the headband where the braided audio cord comes out; to remove the slim speakers, simply shift them towards the back of the headband and out of this hole.

To wash a CozyPhone headband, simply pop it in the washing machine for a gentle cycle with cold water. CozyPhone headbands should not be placed in the dryer as they can experience shrinkage or other damage. Instead, air dry the CozyPhone headband on a flat surface.

CozyPhones are compatible with the majority of CD players and smartphones, but the wired models will require a converter for use with the new iPhone models that use a lightning jack.

Overall, CozyPhones headband headphones are fairly simple to adjust, clean and use. Most CozyPhone customers find them intuitive and user-friendly. The only common complaint is that they can be difficult to fit or adapt for those with smaller than average heads.

Are CozyPhones for You?

CozyPhones are an excellent headphone solution for a variety of needs.

For Kids

Kids love CozyPhones. Many traditional headphones and earbuds are uncomfortably hard for sensitive young ears; CozyPhones are far more appealing with their soft, pleasant fleece texture and colorful, kid-friendly designs.

CozyPhones also tend to have lower volume than most other headphones, which prevents kids from damaging their delicate hearing by turning the volume up too high.

Parents love that CozyPhones are harder to break than traditional headphones and easily machine washable.

For Blocking Out Noise

Additionally, CozyPhones make a great tool for children and adults with sensory stimulation issues. Listening to music or other pleasant sounds through CozyPhones can dampen outside noise to comfortable levels for those who are easily overwhelmed.

If your sleeping partner or roommate snores loudly at night, CozyPhones are the perfect tool to help you get a high-quality undisturbed sleep. They also work for those with noisy bedrooms due to loud air conditioning, heating, fans, neighbors, or busy city streets.

It should be noted that CozyPhones are unfortunately not noise isolating or noise-canceling as with some other headphones.

For Tinnitus

Tinnitus is a buzzing, ringing, or clicking noise heard in the ears without any external cause. Among problems like stress and fatigue, tinnitus can also cause severe trouble sleeping.

Luckily, products like CozyPhones can do a great deal to help those suffering from tinnitus get better quality rest. Listening to white noise while falling asleep can drown out the ringing in the ears, and CozyPhones are much more comfortable to wear while sleeping than traditional headphones and earbuds.

In fact, several tinnitus experts specifically recommend that people with tinnitus use sleep headphones like CozyPhones with white noise to help them fall asleep more easily.

For Insomnia

CozyPhones sleep headphones are a great solution for those suffering loss of sleep due to insomnia. Insomnia is a serious sleep disturbance that affects an estimated 60 million people in the United States each year. Studies have shown that listening to calm, soothing music in bed can be immensely helpful for improving sleep quality in insomniacs.

If you suffer from insomnia, or simply find it difficult to sleep without music, then CozyPhones will allow you to listen to whatever you want without uncomfortable earbuds digging into your ears.

For Sensitive Ears

Even outside the bedroom, some people simply don't enjoy using hard earbuds or headphones. The stiff plastic can be uncomfortable and chafe against the ears or ear canal. CozyPhones are extremely comfortable, contain no hard pieces, and stay securely in place to avoid painful chafing.

In some people, earbuds can cause earwax impaction with prolonged use, which can lead to an ear inflammation, pain, and even hearing loss. With CozyPhones, there's no need to put anything hard in or around your ear.

For Exercising

If you're like most people and enjoy listening to music while exercising, CozyPhones may be worth a try. Traditional headphones and earbuds have trouble staying in place during aggressive movement, and even when they do stay put, they bounce around uncomfortably.

The stretchy nature of CozyPhones allows them to stay securely in place no matter the activity. Active series CozyPhones also help to cool you down while exercising and will wick away sweat rather than getting slippery and holding it against your skin like hard plastic or rubber.

CozyPhones are also extremely lightweight since they are made almost entirely of fabric apart from the speakers. This makes them less disruptive to exercising than bulky, traditional headphones.

CozyPhones versus Traditional Headphones-Which has better sound?

CozyPhone speakers are certainly very different in shape and makeup than other headphone or earbud speakers, so how does the sound quality stand up to more traditional options?

Volume

In general, most users find CozyPhones to have significantly lower volume output than traditional headphones or earbuds. However, the volume level partially depends on how tightly the CozyPhone headband fits on your head because a tighter fit will press the speakers closer against your ears. A looser fit will result in a lower volume.

Whether or not this is an issue probably depends on what you plan to listen to. For quiet sounds or music to fall asleep to, it may not be a very big deal. However, if you want to listen to music in a particularly loud location, they may not be the best choice for your needs.

Another common complaint with CozyPhones is that there is a large amount of sound leakage while listening to music on high volume. Since the speakers are only resting against the ears and not cupped around them or stuck inside them, there is very little to insulate the sound. If you're listening to fairly loud music or other sounds in a quiet bedroom, the sound leakage may be an issue for your bed partner.

Overall, most customers felt that the volume and sound leakage level of CozyPhones met their needs adequately, but there are some downsides to keep in mind.

Noise Blockage

Without music or sound turned on, CozyPhones produce about as much sound blockage as if you had two foam pads resting over your ears. Additional sound blockage can be achieved by turning the volume up, but it's unlikely that even the highest volume setting would drown out very loud noises.

It's essential to bear in mind that CozyPhones are not designed to be noise isolating or noise-canceling like some other headphones. They will block out quiet noises and dampen loud noises simply by resting over your ears or playing music, but that's not their intended purpose.

There have also been a few complaints that the lycra mesh in the active series CozyPhones is quite noisy when the fabric shifts. Some customers have stated that the squeaky noise it makes is significantly disruptive to their listening experience and that the speakers don't do much to block this sound out.

If you are looking for headphones to completely block out or cancel surrounding noise, then CozyPhones probably aren't the right product for you.

However, if you just need something to slightly dampen noise or only block out very quiet nighttime noises, then CozyPhones should be fine.

Are they actually "cozy"?

Yes! The vast majority of reviewers have reported that their CozyPhones are just as cozy as promised.

In particular, the original series CozyPhones and new contour CozyPhones are made with soft fleece material that is comfortable enough to sleep in.

The headband is designed to be gentle enough to be pulled down over the face and used as a sleep mask, and customers have found that it works well for this purpose.

One minor complaint about the original series CozyPhones is that the dense fleece material can be a bit stuffy and overly warm in hot climates. This issue has been corrected with the contour CozyPhones, which incorporate a cooling mesh lining to make the headband more cool and breathable.

Contour CozyPhones are also shaped to better stay in place on your face, so you don't wake up with them in an uncomfortable position.

If you live in a hot and humid climate or tend to get too hot in bed, it may be best to choose the contour CozyPhones for sleeping purposes rather than the original series CozyPhones.

One other potential problem is that some reviewers have woken up with the CozyPhone cord wrapped around them in awkward positions. A few have even accidentally snapped or otherwise damaged the cord while shifting in bed.

While this is a rare issue, it can be solved by choosing the new wireless contour series CozyPhones. This is a more expensive option, but it may be well worth it if you tend to thrash around in bed.

The Verdict

CozyPhones are a great new option for anyone who likes listening to music in bed or who needs white noise or other auditory stimulation to fall asleep. They're comfortable, practical, and work very well for their intended purpose.

There are definitely some downsides, such as the sound leakage and lower volume than traditional headphones. CozyPhones also don't do much more than dampen outside noises, so they aren't a good choice for those who want noise-canceling abilities.

CozyPhones also have potential as athletic headphones, since they are lighter and less clunky than traditional headphones. Earbuds may still be a better option for some people with their higher volume, but CozyPhones are a great choice for those who can't or don't like to stick things in their ears.

Overall CozyPhones are a versatile and useful product with only some minor issues. They may not be the best headphone option for every situation, but they're excellent for a comfortable bedtime listening experience.
